Bowling Club
Bowling is one of the fastest growing high school sports across the United States. Our Bowling Club meets once a month in both Las Vegas and Reno for bowling. Students come to bowl, meet their classmates, teachers and staff, enjoy free pizza and have a lot of fun.
Community Service Club
Community Service Club meets one to two times a month to work on projects that help our community. This club has a simple, but meaningful mission. As a group they provide support and encouragement to those in need. They work with a diverse group of people including the elderly, youth, and various organizations. Some of the activities they have been doing include a car wash for one of our teachers, John Snyder, who has been hospitalized since August 2010, food drives to support Three Square, letters and cell phones for soldiers, and many other worthwhile activities!
Game Club
The Game Club is about getting your own designs the way you want them to be. With the help of the program anim8or you will be able to design different components of the gaming world, you could design anywere from the characters to the controller you use to move them and everything in between. We also talk about the new games that are coming out on the different platforms as long as they are school appropriate, AKA Rated E for Everyone. Plus as a bonus we will be able to show off your designs to everyone else to see and to give ideas on how to improve.
Gay Straight Alliance
Gay and Straight Alliance is a club that welcomes everyone to
1. Create safe environments in schools for students to support each other and learn about homophobia and other oppressions
2. Educate the school community about homophobia, gender identity, and sexual orientation issues, and
3. Fight discrimination, harassment, and violence in schools.
We meet online in Elluminate sessions as well as have physical/ in person meetings every month at different locations that support the cause.
Master-Minds (Math Club)
The Master-Minds club meets monthly to discuss math in the "Real World" to show our students that math can be a lot of fun and to challenge our students to grow. We also have fun celebrating important days and events in the history of math. For example, our favorite holiday is Pi Day! You know, 3.1416. We celebrate Pi Day by playing math games, eating delicious pie and having a pie eating contest.
Movie Club
Movie club is a new activity started in 2011 as a result of students expressing interest in getting together to watch movies and hang out together. Once per month, our students pick a movie to watch and then discuss. Even students who are not able to attend in person can participate by joining the discussion through an online Elluminate session.
Parenting Club
Parenting Club was created as a support system for any Beacon Academy student who is a parent themselves or is expecting a child. The club meets one Wednesday a month, during the evening, to talk about community resources for parents, idea sharing, and as a support for each other. In addition, community agencies are invited to come and talk about the resources they provide as well as information on parenting techniques. Beacon Babies was also created this year to help support parents towards their graduation goals. Parents who participate in Parenting Club are encouraged to bring their child into the Beacon Academy office for tutoring while a mentor and a member from the service club watches their child.
Photography Club
The primary goal of our club is to create an environment where students can learn as much as possible about photography. It provides an outlet for students interested in photography to show off their art and discuss photography outside of the classroom setting.
Science Club
Science Club is a blast! Students meet on Wednesdays to discuss interesting topics in the world of science. Some of the discussions cover topics of interest to the students such as the ones listed below:
• Dinosaurs;
• Fossils;
• Aliens/life on other planets;
• Outer Space;
• Sharks; and
• Robots!
There is so much more that can be covered and everyone has a lot of fun, making new friendships and increasing their interest in science.
Student Council
This group of students is elected to represent the needs, wants and concerns of the student body. They are in constant contact with the administration. Additionally, the students on the student council learn a great deal about how a government should function and how to work within the "government" to achieve key goals and objectives. Beacon's Student Council is busy every year with various activities. They plan major events such as our annual winter party, various dances and helping promote other club's events.
Yearbook
Our yearbook club is an exciting activity. It was launched in 2011 and has worked on the inaugural version of our annual year. The Yearbook Club has the primary goal of publishing a chronicle of the school year by producing Beacon Academy's yearbook. The Yearbook Staff is responsible for developing a yearbook theme, options for applying the theme, layout of the yearbook, photo content and composition, headlines and captions, page design, and a marketing plan. Involvement in the Yearbook Club offers the opportunity to gain life skills, assume responsibilities and have great fun all at the same time.
